In March 2001, on 12 March 2001 to be precise, Rod Stewart released his 19th studio album ‘Human’.
The album was not very well received by the critics, although it contained songs such as ‘Loveless’ and ‘It Had To Be With You’, which are still among the Stewart favourites of the author of this text and have a place in his all-time playlist. But that is only the subjective perception of one person; ‘Human’ has not been a big hit with the public, as the chart positions suggest. The ninth place achieved in Germany and the United Kingdom is still the best ranking, in the USA (rank 50) and Australia (55) the disc only found itself among the ‘distant favourites’. Not to mention other countries.
The internet portal ‘Allmusic.com’ summarised its review of the album as follows: ‘Human is the sound of an artist who is painfully trying to sound modern, but - by trying to sound fresh - sounds older than he ever was’.
Probably the most infectious songs on the album, which also achieved a certain degree of fame, were ‘I Can't Deny It’ and ‘Run Back Into Your Arms’. After their release, the two singles were the two most played songs on the ‘Human’ album on the radio, even though no radio station would ever have placed them above the big hits such as ‘Maggie May’, ‘Baby Jane’ or ‘I Don't Want To Talk About It’.
The limited success of the album was also not helped by the two world-famous guitarists Slash and Mark Knopfler, who played on some of the songs. Somehow, Sir Rod himself doesn't seem to have been entirely convinced by this work either, as only ‘I Can't Deny It’ - the only Human track - ever made it onto the singer's concert set list.
