Rod Stewart in an interview with Talk Sport Radio: We're completely freaked out

Two days after the Champions League clash between Celtic and Bayern and Sir Rod's two - now legendary - interviews on CBS Sports and TNT Sports, the singer today looked back on the game and his ‘personal prematch performance’ in an interview with British online radio station Talksport, as well as giving his thoughts on the Scottish league. Rod also revealed his plans for this concert year.

The YouTube video of Rod Stewart's interview with former world-class goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel from Wednesday evening has already reached 2.23 million clicks. Unbelievable. The whole world enjoyed the funny and fluffy chat before the Champions League game at Celtic Park, including a spontaneous singing interlude.

Rod Stewart was delighted with the positive feedback after his performance: ‘I think people enjoyed it’. The 80-year-old warned the TV presenters that it could be a little different: ‘I warned them beforehand that I was in a very, very cheerful mood,’ he told the Talksport presenters with a grin on his face.

However, his assessment of Wednesday's 90 minutes was spot on: ‘We put in a great performance,’ praised the 80-year-old. ‘I was very, very proud of this team at the end. You mustn't forget, we scored that offside goal in the first minute and we were robbed of a clear penalty, yes it was a crystal-clear penalty,’ raged the Musikone and continued: ’The most important thing is that we can keep up with these teams. And we can do that. Apart from the game at Aston Villa, we were right on course and were also able to keep up with Bayern Munich. We've improved a lot and despite everything, you mustn't forget how big the difference still is in terms of salaries and what the clubs can spend'.

However, the noble Celtic fan is worried about his own Scottish league, even if he can still be as happy as a little child when arch-rivals Rangers lose. ‘When the nice boy (the goalkeeper from Queens Park FC) saved the penalty, my son and I danced around the room, jumped over the sofa and completely freaked out,’ laughs Stewart. The heavy favourites Rangers were knocked out of the FA Cup at the weekend with a 1-0 defeat to Queens Park FC.

But Rod quickly put on a serious face again. ‘We need more strength in the league,’ he said. ‘We need strong Rangers, strong Hibs and strong Hearts too. Honestly, it's getting ridiculous watching Celtic, it's so easy for them at the moment, we need more competition again, we need more strength in the league.’

Perhaps some of Scotland's footballers can take a leaf out of Sir Rod's book, who still looks like a fountain of youth. ‘I turned 80 this year and I'm playing exactly 80 matches this year. To keep myself in shape, I train hard and I'm a bit like the footballers. My concerts are physically demanding and that's why I never play more than four a week. The most important thing is to protect my voice. That's why I'm not allowed to talk much during the day and certainly not to shout. My voice is my crown jewel and the only thing I really have to take care of'.

And what do we fans learn from these statements? Exactly, Rod has announced 80 concerts for this year, the year in which he turned 80. 67 of them have already been announced, so there are still 13 to go, so it will be interesting to see what else is in store for us.
