It was a mega concert for a good cause and everyone came: Stevie Nicks, Earth, Wind and Fire, Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Katy Perry, Pink, to name but a few - and of course Sir Rod Stewart. The FireAid LA benefit concert in aid of the victims of the fire disaster in the Californian metropolis was broadcast worldwide on the Internet.
The huge artist line-up was split between two shows - in the Intuit Dome, where the Los Angeles Clippers usually play basketball, and in the Kia Forum, formerly the home of the Los Angeles Lakers. The show at the Kia Forum started about 90 minutes earlier, at 6pm local time, and was opened by Green Day with their song ‘Last Night On Earth’.
In the Intuit Dome, actor Samuel L. Jackson announced the start of the evening and introduced opening act Rod Stewart as his ‘former neighbour’.
Rod took to the stage with his band in top form and really got going. Forever Young was the first of three Stewart megahits in a row. The 80-year-old then explained to the audience why the organiser was presenting a British singer on stage. ‘I've lived here for 50 years, 50 years!’ said Stewart. ‘Los Angeles is in my blood, in my soul and in my heart,‘ said the singer and immediately launched into the next top hit with Maggie May (’And here's a new song - not"). Before his final song, he thanked the audience for being part of this ‘tremendous thing’ and hit the tone of the evening with his rendition of Curtis Mayfield's People Get Ready. ‘Let's raise a lot of money,’ Sir Rod then took his leave of the stage and made way for the evening's other artists, such as Sting and Stevie Wonder.
After around seven hours, Lady Gaga brought the event to a close with a composition written especially for the evening.
