One Night Only as a chart hit: Rod Stewart's releases in December

The last month of the year is characterised by contemplative Christmas celebrations and an often lively party at the turn of the year with music, dancing and fireworks. Especially at Christmas, it is customary to shower loved ones with presents, often in the form of CDs, LPs or concert videos.

Christmas sales have therefore always been THE end-of-year business for musicians of all genres, and many new works are placed in shops and online shops in the weeks and months leading up to Christmas in order to be available for people's buying frenzy. Over the years, October and November have proven to be the months in which most new releases from the world of music are available.

However, it also happens time and again that musicians ‘bang out’ a single or album at the last minute, i.e. just a few days before the festive season. For some undecided people who don't yet know exactly what they want to give as a present, these late bloomers on the market are often a nice option when making a decision.

We did some research to find out whether and to what extent Rod Stewart is one of these late bloomers and what new material he has released since the 1970s just before Christmas.

Firstly, it should be noted that Sir Rod has not released any of his 31 studio albums to date in the month of December, although he has released a few singles and a live DVD. At second glance, it should be noted that the chart success of the singles was very limited. The 79-year-old released six singles in the month of December - not one of which made it into the Top 10. The closest was the Paul McCartney song Mine For Me (Smiler album), which made it to number 12 in the UK in 1974 and stayed there for nine weeks.

My Girl (Foolish Behaviour) made it to number 32 in the UK six years later (7 weeks). Trouble from the 1984 album Camouflage only reached number 95 and disappeared from the charts after just one week. At the same time, the US single All Right Now reached number 72 in the US charts and remained there for six weeks. In 1986, In My Life (Beatles cover of Every Beat Of My Heart) reached No. 80 in the UK, while Havin' A Party (unplugged version with Ronnie Wood) reached No. 36 in the USA in 1993

Sir Rod Stewart's most successful December release was therefore not a single, but the live recording of his 2004 concert One Night Only from London's Royal Albert Hall, released on DVD. The video album stayed in the charts for 190 weeks, reaching number four. It was also Sir Rod Stewart's last official video album to date.
