The whole world knows the images of Sir Rod cheering, singing, jumping and sometimes mobbing in the stands at Celtic Park in Glasgow as he watches his favourite club play. In an interview with the football podcast Soccer A-Z, he was asked whether he would like to invest money in a football club and act as a club owner. You could almost hear Rod slapping his hands over his face at the question. ‘No, mate, no, not in a million years,’ the passionate football supporter immediately rebuffed. ‘Look what it did to Elton (ed. note: Elton John). He was always completely beside himself when they lost. And I take it very personally when Celtic lose. That would not be good’.
Elton John was president of the current second division club FC Watford from 1976. He sold the club in 1990, but initially remained president. He then bought the club back in 1997 and still holds shares in Watford FC today.
Rod Stewart also has other reasons for not getting involved in a club. ‘You know, I don't want to incur the wrath of the fans when you walk out of the stadium. I just want to remain a humble fan’.
However, Sir Rod would have no problem if one of his fellow musicians were to pour money into his favourite club, Celtic. Rapper Snoop Dog recently signalled his interest in becoming a shareholder in the traditional Scottish club. ‘There's a reason their fans are known all over Europe - the best players and coaches in the world say there's nothing like Celtic Park anywhere, and I want to be a part of it,’ said Snoop Dog. Rod Stewart would welcome a financial commitment: ‘It would be nothing for me, but Snoop Dog should invest in us. Come on, mate, show us your cash,’ Sir Rod let the rapper know in his usual humorous way.
