1:7 in Dortmund: Celtic hit rock bottom in the Champions League

Celtic Football Club suffered a heavy defeat on matchday 2 of the Champions League. The team coached by Brendan Rodgers lost 7-1 (5-1) at Borussia Dortmund. The Hoops had beaten Slovan Bratislava 5:1 in the opening match, but now suffered this bitter defeat.

The game at Dortmund's Signal Iduna Park had not even really started when the Bhoys were already behind in Grenn. Liam Scales brought down Karim Adeyemi unfairly in the penalty area and Emre Can converted the resulting penalty to give BVB an early lead.  Daizen Maeda equalised after nine minutes, but then Celtic really came into their own: 2:1 Adeyemi (11‘), 3:1 Adeyemi (29’), 4:1 Guirassy (39‘) and 5:1 Adeyemi (41’). - Fortunately for the Scottish champions, the game went into the half-time break.

After the break, the Hoops were only looking to limit the damage, while Dortmund also shifted down a gear. Nevertheless, the home side kept the game under control at all times and added goals six and seven through Guirassy (66) and substitute Nmecha (79). Team manager Brendan Rodgers said after the game: ‘Of course we're disappointed with the result. Every mistake we made was bitterly punished, we lost the ball far too quickly. It was a tough evening for us, even if the lads showed character in the second half and became a bit braver. But overall, Dortmund were simply too good for us tonight.

For Celtic, it was another evening to forget on the international stage. After six successive league wins and a 20-0 scoreline, Rodgers' side had certainly expected something from last season's finalists. In the end, however, the Hoops returned home empty-handed and will now be looking for a reaction this weekend when they travel to Ross County (Sunday, 1.00pm CEST).

The Bhoys continue their Champions League campaign on 23 October with an away game at Atalanta Bergamo.
