Cleveland: Rod Stewart and Billy Joel deliver a show in a class of its own

There are concerts in the life of a music lover that you simply have to see. If you weren't there live, then you should at least watch videos or listen to albums. These include the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the Live Aid concert in 1985.

Rock veterans Rod Stewart and Billy Joel came close to this category with their first show together at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland. However, the two thoroughbred musicians, both in their 70s, had not come to prove it to any critics or set a new record, they just played for the fun of it and had an evening of many memories and lots of fun with their fans.

Sir Rod opened the evening at 7pm local time sharp with a show that lasted exactly 92 minutes and included many of his great classics such as MAGGIE MAY, YOUNG TURKS, DOWNTOWN TRAIN and DA YA THINK I'M SEXY. With the opener songs INFATUTAION and above all HAVIN' A PARTY, Sir Rod got the audience going early on.

By LOVE TRAIN or HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE RAIN at the latest, the 69,000 fans in the sold-out former Browns Stadium, as the Huntington Bank Field used to be called, could no longer be held back.

DOWNTOWN TRAIN in particular brought a touch of romance as dusk fell over the city on the shores of Lake Erie and Rod sang in a slightly modified version: ‘The downtown trains are full / Full of all them Cleveland girls.’

For RHYTHM OF MY HEART, the 79-year-old once again wore the yellow and blue suit in the colours of Ukraine and addressed an urgent message to the American people. ‘Whoever moves into the White House, please stop this war!’

The internet portal CLEVELAND.COM wrote about Rod's appearance: ‘At 79, he's spry, fit, fun and - as far as that goes - “Forever Young”.

After just over an hour and a half, Rod Stewart finished his show and then left the stage to his partner for the evening. Billy Joel took to the stage at exactly 9.11pm local time and played a two hour and six minute show, which also included all of the 75-year-old's hits. ONLY THE GOOD DIE YOUG, RIVER OF DREAMS, PIANO MAN, WE DIDN'T START THE FIRE, UPTOWN GIRL - the fans in the arena got their money's worth.

As a special highlight of the evening, Stewart and Joel performed the Faces classic STAY WITH ME together, which was a very special encore for the 69,000 Rod Stewart fans in particular.

After more than four hours of the very best music, many great hits and a show that everyone in the stadium must have simply enjoyed, the lights went out at around 11.30 pm. And many of those who had attended this concert would certainly like to see a repeat of this show. Rod Stewart would probably be available for a new edition of the evening. He has since commented on his social media channels and let his fans know how much he enjoyed the evening. Rod wrote: "Friday night in Cleveland with Billy Joel will go down as one of the most memorable nights of my career ... WOW, we rocked the place! It was a beautiful, sunny evening with 50,000 fans dancing and singing - a much-needed antidote to the troubled, divided world we live in. Billy and I sang 'Stay with Me' together. He was fantastic and I was okay too.🤣

Thank you, Billy! Thank you, Cleveland!"
