Rod Stewart can look back on a magnificent career that began over 60 years ago at Twickenham railway station. Since then, Sir Rod, as he has been able to call himself for some years now, has played countless concerts and delighted millions of fans around the world with his music and songs. His fans, especially those who have been with the Faces from the very beginning or at least since the very beginning, naturally have vivid memories of many of his concerts. Reason enough for us to take a look back at Sir Rod's most legendary and unusual concerts from time to time. Today we start with the concert in Ischgl/Austria in April 2000.
Ischgl is a ski resort in the west of Austria with a population of just under 1700 and belongs to the province of Tyrol. Numerous lifts and cable cars provide access to the slopes of the large Silvretta Arena, which has a total of 238 km of ski slopes and 45 lifts. The town is also known for its lively après-ski scene. The mountain trails lead to alpine lakes such as Lake Vidersee. The Vider Truja water adventure park is also located nearby.
Since the mid-1990s, the municipality has regularly organised concerts with well-known musicians, singers and bands. The ‘Top of The Mountain’ concerts take place every year at the end of the ski season.
To date, a total of 76 concerts have taken place - stars such as Elton John, Bon Jovi, Kylie Minogue, Mariah Carey and even Rod Stewart have performed on the stage at an altitude of 1400 metres.
Stewart was the top act in April 2000 - on the last weekend in April, the arena on the mountain top was bursting at the seams. In glorious sunshine, Sir Rod thrilled 15,000 fans with his great hits.
Stewart told the Austrian media that he was delighted with the location and the entire event. ‘The Alps are fantastic, a completely new experience for me,’ the singer told the Austrian news agency Austria Presse Agentur (APA). The rock icon also let the ski enthusiasts in Ischl know that he doesn't really have much to do with skiing. ‘I only play football,’ Rod told the journalists.
But that didn't stop the superstar, who arrived in the famous ski resort the day before the concert, from giving his fans a top-class show.
Stewart opened the evening with the momentous TONIGHT I'M YOURS and followed it up with more. With MAGGIE MAY, BABY JANE and SOME GUYS HAVE ALL THE LUCK, he really got the party-goers going. YOUNG TURKS and HOT LEGS also got the fans' dancing feet tapping, but in between Sir Rod also slowed things down from time to time and gave the 15,000 a little break with hits such as YOU'RE IN MY HEART and I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT. Rod played a total of 14 songs and left the stage after a good hour with TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT.
