Has Sir Rod Stewart really said goodbye to German concert stages this summer, as his tour motto ONE LAST suggests? In any case, it's time to take a look back at nine concerts in a month and a
half, spread across Germany.
Imagine if there had been no European Football Championship in the summer of 2024, no celebrating Scottish supporters who took the sympathies of an entire nation by storm. No Oranje supporters
jumping wildly from left to right (and back), no Turkish motorcades in the cities. Then the country and the people would have missed out on a lot of joy and good humour, which in these difficult
times is an important factor for each and every one of us to at least temporarily forget the worries of everyday life.
However, those who had secured tickets for a Rod Stewart concert were at least guaranteed two hours of fun and good humour, even if there had been no European Championship.
Consistently positive reviews and concert critics
A total of 116,000 spectators made the pilgrimage to the concert venues in Hanover, Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Mönchengladbach, Leipzig, Berlin, Hamburg, Cologne and Munich. Nobody, really nobody,
went home disappointed after these nine events. "You have to give the people what they want to hear," Rod Stewart once said in an interview. And that's what he did. During the nine shows in
German stadiums and arenas, he hardly missed out on any of his big hits. And the audience thanked him with pure enthusiasm, corresponding comments under countless social media posts and with
grateful reviews in the various concert and live music portals.
"The joie de vivre this legend conveys is absolutely amazing. Plus the mega great voice. I had tears in my eyes at the beginning and this concert will remain in my memories forever. 2 hours
without a break, a fantastic stage show and always keen to give his audience everything," wrote one visitor to the show in Cologne. "Rod Stewart is simply a giant," said another.
Statement for Ukraine
Of course, you can never please everyone, some grumblers always creep in. This time, especially at the concert in Leipzig. Sir Rod even received numerous boos and whistles there, but not for
his show, but rather for his clear statement on the war in Ukraine. He repeatedly dedicated his song RHTYHM OF MY HEART to Ukraine and the Ukrainian people and made it clear what he thinks of
warmonger Russia: His "Fuck Putin" became a perennial favourite this summer and was met with thunderous applause in every hall in the country. In every hall? Well, not in Leipzig, where Sir
Rod was suddenly subjected to a flood of boos and whistles from the audience after saying this. But for the 79-year-old, this was at most a brief moment that must have taken him somewhat by
surprise. But nothing more, as he made no secret of the fact that he would continue his support even after the incidents in Leipzig. "I have supported the Ukrainian people throughout the war.
So yes, I support Zelensky and the Ukrainian people and will continue to do so," Stewart told the British news agency PA the following day.
Nevertheless, the Leipzig scandal became a constant companion to the tour. After each subsequent concert, the media initially focussed on how people had reacted to the announcement of RHYTHM
OF MY HEART. Mostly positive, one would like to shout to the scribblers, because the whistles in Leipzig actually remained a one-off incident. Apart from that, the audience supported
Stewart's commitment like a champ, as part of which members of his family brought relief supplies to the Ukraine, he himself rented a house for a Ukrainian refugee family and hired two people
from the Ukraine for the crew of this tour.
However, we don't want to lump all concertgoers in Leipzig together at this point. There were enough fans in the Quarterback Arena who at least didn't let Rod's political views spoil the
evening. "We Love Rod !!!! Super concert at its best. Everything was just right. His last song SAILING gave me goosebumps. It was a very successful evening," wrote one concertgoer. "We had a
great evening, the concert was super," wrote another.
