Rod Stewart's video message: Take good care of the boys

The European Football Championship kicked off last Friday with the opening match between hosts Germany and Scotland in Munich (5:1). For four weeks, fans all over the world will be focussing on this tournament and the country.

Hundreds of thousands of fans from all participating countries will be supporting their teams up until the final on 14 July and, in the best-case scenario, turn the European Championship into another summer fairytale. One person who would have loved to be at the opening game is Rod Stewart. The self-confessed Tartan Army supporter was travelling for work and was on stage in Leipzig at the same time as the Bravehearts' first European Championship match. Nevertheless, or perhaps precisely because of this, Stewart took the opportunity to send a message of a somewhat different kind.

Instead of sending a clip directly to the team, who have moved into their European Championship base camp in Garmisch-Patenkirchen, the 79-year-old turned to the mayor of Garmisch, Elisabeth Koch (nickname: Sissi), with a short clip. The mayor had invited Stewart to come to Garmisch-Patenkirchen and visit the Scottish team during the tournament.

Now Sir Rod sent the answer, as always with that pinch of good Stewart humour. Rod reported that he would not be able to attend the opening game as he is currently touring Germany. However, he did not forget to give the Town Hall boss a clear instruction with a wink: "Look after the boys, make sure they go to bed early and don't drink too much alcohol." Sir Rod ended his short message with the sentence: "Hopefully we'll see each other one day."

How the mayor reacted to this message is not yet known.
